Math Prize for GirlsThe Math Prize for Girls is an annual mathematics competition open to female high school students from the United States and Canada. The competition offers the world’s largest single monetary math prize in a math contest for young women. The single-day annual contest is open to female high-school students in 12th grade or below, from the United States and Canada who have attained a qualifying score on the American Mathematics Competitions Exams, specifically the AMC 10 or AMC 12 each year. Up to 300 participants are then selected each year for the competition. Participants must complete 20 short-answer problems in geometry, algebra, trigonometry, and other math topics in 150 minutes. The exams are then reviewed by a panel of judges, who award cash prizes to the top-scoring participants. Top 35 performers are invited to participate in the Math Prize Olympiad, a proof-based contest to be administered at a student's school.

American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME)The American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) is the second exam in the series of exams used to challenge bright students on the path toward choosing the team that represents the United States at the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). While most AIME participants are high school students, some bright middle school students also qualify each year. High scoring AIME students are invited to take the prestigious United States of America Mathematics Olympiad (USAMO) for qualification from taking the AMC 12 or United States of America Junior Mathematics Olympiad (USAJMO) for qualification from taking the AMC 10.

AMC 12The American Mathematics Contest 12 (AMC 12) is the first exam in the series of exams used to challenge bright students, grades 12 and below, on the path towards choosing the team that represents the United States at the International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO). High scoring AMC 12 students are invited to take the more challenging American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME).

AMC 8The AMC 8 is a contest for students in grades 8 and below, hosted annually by the Mathematical Association of America to students all over the United States. The AMC 8 is a 25 multiple-choice question, 40-minute competition designed for middle schoolers. The AMC 8 is a standalone competition; students cannot qualify for the AIME via their AMC 8 score alone. The AMC 8 is scored based on the number of questions answered correctly only. There is no penalty for getting a question wrong, and each question has equal value. The American Junior High School Mathematics Examination (AJHSME) was the predecessor of the AMC 8, held from 1985 to 1998.

USA Mathematical Talent SearchThe USA Mathematical Talent Search (USAMTS) is a free mathematics competition open to all United States middle and high school students. As opposed to most mathematics competitions, which typically place considerable emphasis on solving problems quickly, each round of the USAMTS allows students a full month to work out their solutions to five problems. With the exception of the first problem of every round, which is a puzzle, carefully written justifications are required for each problem. The problems range in difficulty from being within the reach of most high school students to challenging for the best students in the nation. Students may use any materials—books, calculators, computers—but all the work must be their own. The USAMTS is run on the honor system—it is an individual competition, whose competitive role is secondary. Student solutions to the USAMTS problems are graded by a variety of people with mathematical backgrounds, including math educators, former USAMTS contestants, and volunteers from the NSA, and their comments are returned to the students. The goal is to help all students develop problem solving skills, improve their technical writing abilities, and mature mathematically. The USAMTS is one of the ways to enter the process for qualifying to represent the United States at the International Mathematical Olympiad. Students who earn high scores on the USAMTS are invited to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) and can progress further based on their scores on the AIME.
